Recent Accounting Standards or Updates Not Yet Effective

14.    RECENT ACCOUNTING STANDARDS OR UPDATES NOT YET EFFECTIVE

In April 2015, the Financial Accounting Standards Board ("FASB") issued accounting guidance, "Simplifying the Presentation of Debt Issuance Costs" which requires debt issuance costs related to a recognized debt liability to be presented in the statement of financial position as a direct deduction from the carrying amount of that debt. This standard is effective for fiscal years, and for interim periods within those fiscal years, beginning after Dec. 15, 2015, with early adoption permitted for financial statements not yet issued. The company is currently evaluating the impact this guidance will have on the consolidated financial statements and related disclosures.

In November 2015, the FASB issued accounting guidance, "Balance Sheet Classification of Deferred Taxes" which removes the requirement to separate deferred tax liabilities and assets into current and noncurrent amounts and instead requires all such amounts be classified as noncurrent on the Statement of Financial Position. This standard is effective for fiscal years, and interim periods within those fiscal years, beginning after Dec. 15, 2016, with early adoption permitted, including adoption in an interim period, for financial periods not yet reported. The standard may be adopted on a prospective or retrospective basis. Monsanto is required to adopt the standard in the first quarter of fiscal year 2018. The company is currently evaluating the impact this guidance will have on the consolidated financial statements and related disclosures.
