The cost basis of intangible assets includes a foreign currency translation loss of $0.1 million and $0.9 million for the years ended December 31, 2023 and 2022, respectively. Amortization expense for the years ended December 31, 2023, 2022 and 2021 was $3.6 million, $3.7 million and $5.4 million, respectively. Estimated annual amortization expense for the next five years is as follows: 2024 - $3.9 million, 2025 - $3.1 million, 2026 - $2.7 million, 2027 - $2.5 million and 2028 - $2.0 million.
