Competition The retail merchandising business in general, and the supermarket industry in particular, is highly competitive and generally characterized by narrow profit margins. The merger with QFC is being accounted for as a pooling-of-interests. Under purchase accounting, the purchase price is allocated to assets acquired and liabilities assumed based on their estimated fair values. The purchase price is expected to exceed the fair value of the net assets required. This difference has been allocated to goodwill, which will be amortized over 40 years.
