GROUP 1 AUTOMOTIVE COMPLETES NEW MORTGAGE FACILITY

HOUSTON, March 30, 2007 — Group 1 Automotive, Inc. (NYSE: GPI), a Fortune 500 automotive retailer, today announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Group 1 Realty, Inc., has completed an initial $75 million five-year revolving mortgage facility with Bank of America, N.A. This agreement will facilitate the company’s strategic initiative of owning rather than leasing its real estate holdings.

The mortgage facility will provide reasonably priced capital to the company for the purpose of acquiring real estate and buildings in conjunction with its dealership acquisitions and the exercise of selective lease buyout options. The facility also permits Group 1 to move real estate in and out with minor limitations. The facility may be expanded to $175 million in total availability.

“This mortgage facility will provide reasonably priced capital and give Group 1 the flexibility to manage its real estate portfolio as we acquire or expand our operations,” said Earl J. Hesterberg, Group 1’s president and chief executive officer. “This flexibility will improve our ability to react to changing market dynamics as the amount of real estate we own increases over time.”

On December 31, 2006, Group 1 and its subsidiaries held $117.4 million in land and improvements on the balance sheet. The company anticipates acquiring additional real estate in conjunction with its dealership acquisitions, expansion of its existing holdings and the selective exercise of lease buyout options.
