The increase in gross carrying amount of intangible assets from September 30, 2013 to March 31, 2014 is primarily attributable to assets acquired in the acquisition transactions described in Note 3. Total amortization expense related to intangible assets was approximately $5.3 million and $5.5 million for the quarters ended March 31, 2013 and 2014, respectively, and approximately $10.2 million and $10.6 million for the six months ended March 31, 2013 and 2014, respectively. Amortization expense for fiscal 2014 is subject to finalization of the valuation efforts related to the intangible assets acquired in the 2014 transactions, as described in Note 3.

 

Total currently estimated annual amortization expense for 2014 through 2019 is shown in the following table, which estimates are subject to change when the fair values of the intangible assets acquired in 2014 are finalized.
