Explanation of Responses:

1. This Form 3 is filed jointly by Glencore Finance AG, Glencore International AG and Glencore Holding AG. In addition, Glencore Finance AG, Glencore International AG, and Glencore Holding AG have jointly filed a Schedule 13D in connection with their beneficial ownership of shares of common stock issued by James River Coal Company. Glencore Finance AG beneficially owns directly all of the shares of common stock of James River Coal Company, Glencore International AG beneficially owns indirectly all such shares on account of its ownership interest in Glencore Finance AG, and Glencore Holding AG beneficially owns indirectly all such shares on account of its ownership interest in Glencore International AG. Glencore International AG and Glencore Holding AG do not beneficially own directly any shares of common stock of James River Coal Company.
